History

Our journey of excellence in Building Engineering Education

Program History

The Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Negeri Medan originated from the Faculty of Technical Teacher Training (FKIT) of IKIP Medan, which was established in 1965 and lasted until 1983. From 1983 to 2000, FKIT was renamed the Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education (FPTK) of IKIP Medan. When IKIP Medan was transformed into Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED) in 2000, FPTK became the Faculty of Engineering.

Following its transformation into a university, UNIMED received the mandate to organize both educational and non-educational study programs. Since the 1998/1999 academic year, the Faculty of Engineering has expanded its programs to include non-educational fields such as Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Within the Department of Building Engineering Education, the Bachelor’s Program in Civil Engineering officially began admitting new students in the 2017/2018 academic year, implementing a curriculum based on the Indonesian National Qualification Framework (KKNI).

The Building Engineering Education Study Program envisions itself as “a leading, innovative, and creative study program in the ASEAN Region by 2025.”
Its mission includes conducting effective education, research, and community service in building engineering education; fostering character and entrepreneurship; and strengthening the program’s role as an excellent teaching and research institution.

Graduates of the Building Engineering Education Study Program are prepared to become educators or instructors in building or civil engineering, laboratory or workshop technicians, and junior researchers in construction and technical education.
